Après un demi-siècle d'existence, la Corée du Nord reste l'un des pays les plus méconnus au monde. Dans un contexte de crise politique, diplomatique et militaire permanente, le régime dynastique a fait le choix d'une propagande qui « invisibilise » son peuple.Pour en comprendre l'identité et capter le hors-champ de la propagande, Stéphan Gladieu a fait le choix du portrait. Une gageure dans un pays où l'individu n'existe pas. Ni photos de famille, ni portraits personnels... Le singulier n'a pas de réalité dans une société où tout est pluriel, collectif et communautaire.Encadré, accompagné pas a pas tout au long de ses séjours en Corée du Nord, Stéphan Gladieu invente un espace de liberté à l'intérieur du cadre qui lui est imposé. En faisant le choix du portrait de studio, souvent en pied, invitant à la pose frontale et au regard direct. Stéphan Gladieu s'est rapproché des codes de l'image de propagande, rendant ainsi sa démarche, si ce n'est familière, du moins compréhensible par les Nord-Coréens. North Korea remains, after some seventy years of existence, one of the most obscure countries in the world. It is governed in a state of constant political, diplomatic and military crisis, and its dynastic regime imposes rigid propaganda that makes its people « invisible. » Stéphan Gladieu set out to look outside the frame of official imagery by focusing on portraits. In a country where the individual does not exist, where there are no family or personal photographs, this was quite a challenge. The singular has no reality in a society where everything is plural, collective and communitarian. Constantly supervised and accompanied throughout his visits to North Korea, Gladieu nevertheless managed to carve out a space of freedom within the very framework that was imposed on him. By opting for the conventions of the studio portrait, often full-length, and encouraging a frontal pose and direct gaze, he came close to the codes of propaganda imagery thereby making his own approach, if not familiar, then at least understandable for the North Koreans.
